“My responsibilities at work are coordinating the food box and food bank programs… and, that’s just basic love, right? Feeding someone that’s hungry. That’s what it’s all about - showing love however someone needs to receive it. Whether that's a food box or helping them get into detox or sitting and having a “conversation” - which a lot of time is just listening, whether it makes sense or not, just active listening.”
Derek, Care Navigator
Food
In 2022, 14.2% of Lewis County residents were struggling with food insecurity - that means they didn’t have access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Nearly one in five kids in our county does not have enough food, day to day. This lack of food affects far more than our stomachs, with far-reaching implications from chronic health issues to an individual's ability to finish schooling.
When we began leasing our space on Rock Street back in 2011, the first thing we did was organize and open a food bank to meet the needs of our neighbors dealing with food insecurity. Today, we continue to help with our Gather Stockbox program. During the pandemic, when we could no longer have people come in to pick up food, we began taking it to them. In the past 13 years, we’ve grown from helping a few dozen people inside our building to delivering over 600 boxes of food per week. From Rochester to Toledo, Pe Ell to Bucoda, if you live in Lewis county or south Thurston, we’ll bring food to you.
Every week, nearly two dozen people work together to pack and deliver over 11,000 pounds of food. And, this isn’t just a Gather thing. There’s a whole network of volunteers - multiple churches, multiple organizations, multiple groups. We have folks from all walks of life and faith traditions. They just simply want to help.
Thank you to Lewis County Drug Court, Centralia High School, Centralia College, Emmanuel Lutheran, Chehalis United Methodist, Bethel Downtown, and everyone who has ever packed a food box or delivered one. We wouldn’t be Gather without you.
We pack and deliver food boxes every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Food boxes can be picked up in person on Thursdays and Fridays at the Gather Atrium, 408 W. Main Street.
